Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Summary
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but deadly neurological disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own peripheral nerves. This capstone project provides a detailed yet concise summary of the disorder, discussing its symptoms, causes, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and future research. GBS starts as a prickly feeling in the muscles, that can sometimes lead to paralysis. While the exact cause is not understood, many scientists link the disease as an after effect of a common viral or bacterial infection. Diagnosis typically involves a clinical evaluation of the brain and spinal cord. Treatment involves acute care (plasma exchange) as well as physical therapy. However, there is no cure. At the moment, researchers are conducting experiments to discover what triggers start GBS. This project aims to serve as a brief overview to those unfamiliar with GBS and provide a helpful starting point.

This summer, I spent two weeks in Elio’s Accelerator Track within the neuroscience cohort. This experience deepened my interest in a field I had only lightly explored before. I learned a lot about brain structure and function, and how different parts of the brain work together to create who we are—our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. A more personal highlight during my time here at Elio, was learning about Biorender and creating my very own neuron diagrams for my capstone project. I’m extremely grateful towards Elio for the opportunity as it not only strengthened my research skills but also reinforced my interest in pursuing medicine.
