Tourette Syndrome and GABAergic Interneurons

Summary

This project is about how the loss of GABAergic interneurons affects individuals with Tourette's Syndrome. GABAergic interneurons are responsible for creating a neurotransmitter called GABA. This signal is responsible for preventing unintentional muscular movements when trying to move one part of the body. Individuals with Tourette's have 50% less GABAergic interneurons so that those involuntary muscular movements happen frequently.

Through the neuroscience course at Elio Academy I learned about the basics of neuroanatomy and what brain regions are responsible for each function in the human body. One of the main things that I learned that I think is going to significantly impact my scientific research in the future is learning how to critically analyze complicated scientific articles and the ability to efficiently sift through scientific papers for specific information that I am looking for. Applying these skills while working on my scientific poster about the neuroscience of Tourette Syndrome, I noticed I have become much better at properly managing my time more independently because there was a tight end-date for my project. In college I know that I will have to be more self-directed and make sure I reach my academic goals punctually, and the independence involved in this class helped me develop this skill. After finishing the neuroscience course, I feel more confident about working on scientific endeavors in the future.
